Heroism is shown when David  escapes from the camp and also when he saves Maria from the fire.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Trust is shown when David figured out that there are good people and some bad people. He started to trust people.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Honesty is shown when David admits to stealing the bar of soap from the guard. He also is honest when he writes a letter to Carlo explaining that he never hated him.

 

 

 

 

 

 

David lives with many people that he doesn’t know for most of his life and does not have a family until he finds his mother.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Kindness is shown when Maria and Carlos’s Family lets him stay for saving Maria in a fire.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Faith is shown when he could easily give up from his journey but he kept going on. David shows this when he broke his compass, he could have given up but he had faith that he could do it.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Loss is shown when David loses his only friend that told him about everything, treating him like his own son.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Oppression is shown by the Bolsheviks in the Russian Revolution. All the wealthy people get taken into concentration camps or die. The Russian Revolution was meant to make the lives equal but it never did.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

David constantly hides from power. He hides from the Bolsheviks so he doesn’t get taken back to the camp or even killed. He hides on the ship on his journey.

 

 

 

 

 

 

David makes choices throughout the book. His first choice was to escape from the camp and he had many other choices like this for example; admitting to stealing soap and letting Sophie paint him.

 

 

 

 

 

 

     David was disappointed because he was told he could never express his feelings to anyone else.

 

 

 

 

 

David had a farther son relationship with Johannes at the camp and begins to fall in love with Maria.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

David was very afraid of all his surroundings. He could not trust anyone, and he risked his life be escaping.
